The Connection Between Speech and Swallowing: How SLPs Can Help Both

1 min read

Did you know that speech and swallowing functions are closely linked? Many of the same muscles involved in speaking also play a role in swallowing. That’s why speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are uniquely qualified to diagnose and treat both communication and swallowing disorders. At Autumn Oak Speech, Voice & Hearing, we provide expert therapy to help patients improve both their speech and swallowing function.

How Are Speech and Swallowing Connected?

Both speech and swallowing rely on the coordinated movement of:

  • The tongue: Forming words and moving food in the mouth)

  • The lips and cheeks: For articulation and controlling food/liquid flow)

  • The throat muscles: For voice production and directing food safely to the esophagus

When these muscles weaken or become uncoordinated due to certain conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, or ALS, patients may experience both speech difficulties (dysarthria) and swallowing issues (dysphagia)

How Our Therapy Can Help

Our SLPs will use VitalStim® Therapy and customized treatment plans to improve both speech clarity and swallowing function. Through therapy, patients can:

  • Speak more clearly and confidently

  • Reduce the risk of choking or aspiration

  • Improve quality of life through better communication and eating
