Hearing Aid Styles
Find the Hearing Aid Style That Fits Your Life
Today's hearing aid styles in Friendswood, TX range from receiver-in-canal (RIC) systems and traditional behind-the-ear (BTE) housings to in-the-ear (ITE) shells and the smallest invisible-in-canal (IIC) devices that disappear in your ear canal. Autumn Oak fits every major style across rechargeable and disposable platforms — your audiologist compares power, comfort, discretion, and Bluetooth features against your hearing loss and lifestyle so the choice is informed, not guessed at.
Let's Get Started
Choosing the Right Style for Your Lifestyle
The best hearing aid is the one you'll actually wear every day. Each style offers different advantages in size, power, and features — your Friendswood audiologist will help you find the right match.
Receiver-in-Canal (RIC)
The most popular hearing aid style today. A small housing sits behind the ear and sends sound through a thin wire to a speaker placed in the ear canal. RIC devices are lightweight, discreet, and offer excellent sound quality with advanced features like Bluetooth streaming and rechargeable batteries — suitable for mild to severe hearing loss.
Behind-the-Ear (BTE)
The most powerful hearing aid style. The housing sits behind the ear and delivers sound through a tube to a custom ear mold. BTE devices offer the longest battery life, the most amplification, and accommodate advanced features like Bluetooth streaming — making them ideal for severe to profound hearing loss.
In-the-Ear (ITE)
Custom-molded to fill the outer ear bowl, ITE hearing aids are suitable for mild to severe hearing loss. Their larger size makes them easier to handle and adjust, and they can include volume controls, directional microphones, and wireless connectivity.
In-the-Canal (ITC)
Custom-fit to sit partially inside the ear canal, ITC hearing aids are smaller and more discreet than ITE models. They work well for mild to moderate hearing loss and strike a balance between discretion, comfort, and usability.
Completely-in-Canal (CIC)
Fitting entirely inside the ear canal, CIC hearing aids are very discreet with only a small removal handle visible. They're a popular choice for mild to moderate hearing loss when cosmetic appearance is a priority, though their compact size limits some advanced features.
Invisible-in-Canal (IIC)
The smallest hearing aid available, IIC devices sit deep inside the ear canal and are virtually invisible to others. Best suited for mild to moderate hearing loss, they're removed daily with a small pull string. If discretion is your top priority, this is the style to consider.

Hearing Aid Style FAQs
Common questions about hearing aid styles at Autumn Oak in Friendswood, TX — covering the most discreet options, rechargeability across styles, Bluetooth limits, and trying styles before buying.
Invisible-in-canal (IIC) and completely-in-canal (CIC) hearing aids are the smallest and most discreet styles we fit. They sit deep in the ear canal and are virtually undetectable to others, with only a tiny removal handle visible at the canal opening.
Both styles work well for mild to moderate hearing loss. The trade-off is space — smaller housings leave less room for directional microphones, aggressive noise reduction, and larger batteries. ITC and ITE styles sit shallower in the ear, are easier to handle, hold larger batteries (or rechargeable cells), and are appropriate for more severe hearing losses. Our Friendswood audiology team will compare these options against your hearing test and lifestyle.
Most modern RIC, BTE, and many ITE/ITC styles are now available with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries from every major manufacturer. The smallest in-canal styles — CIC and IIC — generally still use disposable zinc-air batteries because there isn't enough internal space for a rechargeable cell plus the necessary charging contacts.
If rechargeability is a priority, your Friendswood audiologist will steer you toward the styles where it's an option. If your audiogram or ear anatomy points toward a smaller in-canal style, we'll talk through the trade-offs and find the right balance between discretion and convenience.
Most current-generation RIC, BTE, ITE, and many ITC hearing aids include built-in Bluetooth for direct streaming from smartphones, tablets, computers, and TVs. Some smaller in-canal models — particularly CIC and IIC — lack this technology because there's no room for the antenna and additional electronics.
If hands-free phone calls, music streaming, or TV streaming are important to you, we'll prioritize Bluetooth-capable styles. Manufacturer apps also let you adjust volume, switch programs, and tune tinnitus features from your phone — your Friendswood audiologist will walk you through what each model can and cannot do.
Yes. Autumn Oak offers demo hearing aids for a 1–2 week trial so you can wear your selected style in real-life environments — at work, in restaurants, on phone calls, anywhere conversation matters. Your audiologist programs the demo pair to your prescription and schedules a follow-up so you can share what's working before you commit.
If the trial style isn't quite right, we revisit the recommendation together. Custom in-canal styles can't be demoed exactly (they're built to your ear), but we can demo a similar form factor so you experience comparable size, comfort, and feature set. Call (346) 474-4626 (Ext. 3) to schedule.
